Beyond Borders: Stories of Syrians in Data (Expert Series 001)
Four Syrian data professionals in Europe and the UK shared how they built their careers, live with the community in Damascus.
At our first meetups, one question kept coming up: what does a data career look like beyond Syria, and how did Syrians actually get there? Beyond Borders was our answer, and the first in our Expert Series.
The session was hybrid: in person in Damascus, connected online to speakers in Europe and the UK.
Speakers: Fuad Raja (Senior Data Consultant), Elie Abboud (Senior Data Engineer), Karam Haddad (Account Director) and Feras Shamashan (Senior Data Consultant). Moderated by Joud Khattab and Abdulrahman Al-Shaar.
The talk stayed on reality, not titles: how they built their skills, the obstacles they faced, how they adapted to new markets, and what they would do differently starting from Syria today. Questions turned into dialogue, and the session laid the groundwork for mentorship between Syrians inside the country and abroad.
When experience is shared openly, borders become context, not limits.
